Italian divers off the coast of Sicily discovered the wreck of a 2,100-year-old ship, including about 500 amphorae. The long-necked, two-handled Roman pots were used to transport wine. Italy's minister of culture said that the find was evidence of ancient trade routes across the Mediterranean and "one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years." Amphora is from the Greek amphoreus, a contraction of amphiphoreus, "two-handled."

A 45-year-old sailor is seven weeks into an attempt to circumnavigate the Arctic Ocean alone. In June, Matt Rutherford set out from Greenland's western coast on his 42-foot sailboat. His voyage around the entire polar basin will be 10,000 nautical miles long, and if he completes it, he'll be the first to do so solo. Rutherford's trip is made slightly easier by the shrinking of Arctic sea ice from climate change — and one of his goals is to raise funds for his climate science nonprofit.

Two polite capybaras wandered into a Brazilian state legislature, meandered sedately around the reception area, and were gently shooed back out the door. The huge, water-loving rodents, which can weigh up to 150 pounds, are known for their decorous, calm interactions with people. Capybaras are often seen near the Mato Grosso parliamentary building enjoying a nearby lake or splashing in a fountain out front. Decorous is from the Latin decorus, "proper."

A blind horse named Milo will compete in this fall's Horse of the Year Show after learning an equine form of braille. Milo and his owner, Megan Share, had competed in dressage for years before the horse lost his vision to an infection three years ago. Milo uses his sense of touch, interpreting Share's physical cues and the ground beneath his hooves to understand where he is and what's around him. He returned to competition last year and won first place at the 2025 Royal Windsor Show.

There was a rare chord change in the world's slowest concert, which has been playing the same piece of music by composer John Cage at a glacial pace since 2001. The John Cage Organ Project plans to perform "ORGAN2/ASLSP (As Slow as Possible)" on an electric organ in a church in Halberstadt, Germany, for a total of 639 years, concluding in 2640. While the continuous sound of the piece is powered by a blower, chord changes are done manually — this time with the addition of an eighth pipe.

This month marked the start of the Women's Pro Baseball League's inaugural season. The league's debut began with a matchup between the New York Heights and the Los Angeles Queens in Springfield, Illinois, where the first season's games will all be held. The WPBL, which plans to expand from an initial four teams to six or eight, gives women who have competed in baseball or softball their whole lives an opportunity to continue to play after college.

Days of heavy downpours caused extensive flooding in India's northeastern Assam state. Drenching monsoons led several rivers to overflow their banks and inundate villages, sweeping away hundreds of houses and leading to the deaths of at least 100 people. Although monsoon season continues through September, a break in the rain allowed many people to return to their homes. The Arabic mawsim, "time of year," is the root of monsoon.

The Swedish government announced it will ban "forever chemicals" in clothing starting in January 2028. Sweden will also proscribe the use of PFAS in shoes, cosmetics, kitchenware, waterproofing chemicals, and ski wax, with the stipulation that there must be alternatives available to manufacturers. The move puts Sweden at the forefront of the push to eliminate long-lasting synthetic chemicals ahead of an EU plan to announce its own ban some time in 2027.

A flight missed its departure deadline and was canceled after a recalcitrant child refused to sit down and buckle up. The Porter Airlines flight to Toronto was scheduled to leave Victoria, British Columbia, at 11 p.m. The child was stubbornly "standing in their seat and would not secure their seatbelt," and was ultimately removed from the flight with their parent. The Latin root of recalcitrant means "to kick back."

Extreme heat has depleted water levels in the Danube River, revealing at least a dozen sunken World War II ships. The exposed vessels have begun to stymie navigation on the river, which is a major European shipping route. Ship captains are increasingly impeded by the detritus as the river recedes, constantly adjusting their routes to avoid the obstacles. Stymie was originally a Scottish word for the golf predicament that occurs when an opponent's ball blocks the hole.
